Working in Green Energy

CAREERS IN GREEN ENERGY
It’s not often that an industry gets the exposure and support that the
renewables sector has received in the last few years. But then there aren’t
many parts of the economy that have the potential to play such a vital part in
our future.
Most people now accept the pressing need to take action to combat global
warming. That’s why the European Union is aiming to reduce carbon dioxide
emissions by up to 60% by the middle of the century. One of the ways it
plans to achieve this is by increasing the proportion of our energy that comes
from renewable sources.
This means that renewable energy is destined to become one of the fastest
growing sectors of the Irish economy over the coming years, with estimates
of tens of thousands of new jobs being created. So why not be a part of it?
With such a diverse range of renewable technologies, and companies willing
to exploit them – from tiny start-ups to the major utilities – it’s not surprising
that a wide range of skills are required in the renewables sector. The skills
you will need will also depend on whether you want to work in research,
development, manufacturing, construction, operations, or in specialist work.
Technical and engineering skills will obviously be in demand by
manufacturers and installation/maintenance contractors. This will include
civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as software and process
control. Similar skills will also be needed in the installation and
maintenance of renewable plant and equipment. If you’re a school leaver, a
recent graduate, want to improve the environment in the future, or just want
a challenging and worthwhile career, the renewables sector may be just the
place for you.

One Response to “Working in Green Energy”

  1. Excellent page of resources – wish I’d seen it earlier – alas I don’t see WIT featured. That and Dungarvan would suit me.
