EDUCATION Minister Ruairi Quinn has defended the latest cost-cutting review of 68 allowances paid to teachers and other staff under his wing, writes Katherine Donnelly.
He said they had to “look at everything”.
Teachers’ unions have made it clear that they would regard any cuts in the allowances of existing staff as a breach of theCroke Park agreement.
But Mr Quinn told the Irish Independent that the question of whether “they are part of core pay or not, this is a matter that will have to be determined”.
Around 12,000 teachers and staff, including those at third-level, are facing more cuts under the latest review.
New teachers have, however, lost the qualifications allowance, which, combined with other cuts, means that since 2008 the gross pay of a new teachers has been reduced by 21pc.
