Young farmers happy with choice of occupation

It appears that the current crop of young farmers are an optimistic bunch. Despite the difficulties of farming in 2012, 91pc said they did not regret choosing it as their occupation.

Their resounding endorsement of agriculture as a career is particularly interesting given that many young farmers also have non-farming qualifications and have worked abroad in both farming and non-farming jobs.

Some 40pc of those surveyed have a non-farming third level qualification in addition to their farming qualification.

Over 23pc of the young farmers have worked abroad in an agri-related job for more than six months, while almost 9pc have worked abroad for more than six months in a non-farming job.

The vast majority (87pc) of those surveyed believe that all young farmers should spend a period of time working abroad to gain experience before returning to the home farm.
